Lina Corrales emerged back on the scene in Denver last Summer after an eight year hiatus from music and has been going non-stop ever since. After initially grabbing our attention with “Button Eyes” and “Rain Song”, her newest single “Event Horizon” joins her impressive roster of catchy Indie Rock tunes that inspire one to turn up the volume a little higher. A high production quality really helps this song stand out among others within a genre that typically privileges lo-fi aesthetics. I was instantly hooked on this song when I initially heard the guitar intro followed by Lina’s gentle, yet captivating voice — a voice that has consistently proven time and again to be filled with so much emotion, heartache, and relatability that listeners can really visualize themselves in the situations that Lina sings about.
Besides Lina’s demonstrated ability for singing and songwriting on “Event Horizon”, the instrumentation and structure on this song also helps to set it apart from others. The song’s layering is especially compelling. We start with guitar, then add voice, then each subsequent element thereafter only adds to the soundscape. At the peak, Lina subverts expectations and pulls the rug out on us with dramatic pauses mid phrase — this helps to keep the song refreshing and listeners guessing as to what might come next. And with that being said, it is exciting to see what 2025 has in store for Lina with many more shows to be played and songs to be released. Stay tuned for an EP in the Spring and another single on the way set for release at the end of March.
