New EP from Dead Boyfriend - “it’s just bad news”

Dead Boyfriend’s new EP “it’s just bad news” was just released on January 12th. It coincidentally came out at the same time as the polar vortex swept across the area, which became the perfect scenery for listening to this with my morning cup of coffee. This EP opens up with this nostalgic guitar riff that instantly pulls you into “alaskan angel”, which blossoms incredibly with layers of lush vocals and a beautiful moment when the drums begin with the delayed harmonies around the 1:27 mark. The ending transitions in what feels like a page turn of a book, or perhaps a quick instrument swap as “circumstances” begins with a beautiful violin performance and clean guitars. One of my favorite moments on the EP comes just before the one-minute mark in “heaven to you” as this infectious synth melody creeps into the forefront, but doesn’t overstay its welcome. Right as it’s almost forgotten, the synthesizer seeps back in seamlessly with the rest of the instrumentation. The final track, “i can always be found”, circles back to a feeling that lies somewhere between serene and somber, before progressing into this big moment soaked in shoegaze guitars that wraps up the project in a wonderful twelve-minute listening experience. What begins as 12 minutes soon becomes 24, 36, and 48 as you keep coming back to sit with the addicting songwriting and production from Ashley Nova and friends.
